“A fearsome creature with giant tentacles that’ll suction your face clean off and drag entire ships down to the crushing darkness.” – Mr Gibbs in the movie Pirates of The Caribbean. This quote sparked many ideas of what this creature looked like, the description alone is enough to strike fear.

Fear and imagination go hand in hand, and with the help of the internet, popular culture and word of mouth fear can lead to irrational belief, for example a creature who brings down ships and devours men. A lot of people fear the ocean because of the thought that humongous man-eating creatures lurk in every nook and cranny. The ocean is vast and holds many unknowns, so this idea is not entirely irrational.

I believe humans tend to have a deep desire for what they imagine to be real even if they don’t entirely know it themselves. Everyone has the ability to imagine, it truly is a wondrous thing. Our imagination can be so powerful it can lead people to believe what they had imagined is real. My goal is to find the line where imagination meets reality through the use of mythical creatures and sculpture.
