This year, I decided to push my technical repertoire and specialise in cinematography, compositing/editing and storytelling. My work usually depicts themes of sci-fi dystopia and Victoriana, but this time I decided to produce a documentary that would tackle sexism and discrimination against gender diversity.
The documentary, ‘More Than Female’, is a look at our society in the 21st Century, compared with the 19th Century, and how far we’ve progressed regarding feminist theory and gender diversity. My focus is gender diversity in the workplace, women working in male-dominated industries, gender stereotypes and sexual harassment. I produced a documentary that explains the experiences of many women and LGBT+ people today, and throughout history, as well as challenging the assumptions around the word ‘feminism’. It’s estimated that one in three women will experience some form of sexual harassment or abuse, and that 70% of those cases will go unreported.
My philosophy of film is that it’s a powerful medium to not only express the world around us, and escape it, but to also represent marginalised groups within society. If there is anything my motion design tutor, Tim Budgen, and film have taught me, it’s that resilience and creativity are key.
After graduating, I want to enter the film industry and specialise in cinematography, compositing, and 2D animation.
