For my final project I decided to make a fictional compositional thumbnail that depicts poverty in the environment. The environment is based on the Philippines slum fused with its big landmarks, e.g. the Rizal Monument.
The project began with research about poverty’s relation to a country’s debt. In the Philippine context, I found out that as the country sinks deeper into the depths of poverty, its people struggle for survival as they’re being evicted from their homes and forced to live in shanty towns. The slums are the most obvious visual signifier of poverty, which is why most of my compositions are clustered.
I was mostly doing character design this year, which I greatly enjoyed. Environmental design is something that I’ve only just started getting into. I’m including environmental design in my final project as a way to explore more and showcase my drawing skills. In the future, I hope to work in an animation studio as I’ve always been a fan of animated films, especially the hand-drawn ones.
